Fundacion Reforestemos is an NPO organization currently striving to be the leader in the recovery and the redevelopment of the Chilean ecosystem. It promotes cultural changes in relation to the cure and the restoration of Chilean native forests and sensitization about the importance of strong and blooming areas. Their main mission is to reforest degraded ecosystems in the Patagonia region, helping the redevelopment of local areas with huge impact on the region’s environment and population. Nowadays, Fundacion Reforestemos is the only project directly supported by Piantando, but we are establishing partnership and we hope to be able to deliver our message through many similar organizations in the near future The main partner in the Fundacion Reforestemos project is CONAF (National Forestry corporation). CONAF together with Patagonia Sur, act on the selection of degraded areas in national parks and national reserves. At the same time, they select the native plants to be chosen for the area’s redevelopment and work for the protection and preservation actions needed to guarantee their growth. Once these decisions are made, Patagonia Sur and their well experienced team of volunteers carry on the planting process. The forestry teams are divided in smaller groups lead by a forest engineer and a technician, three Jaloneros and up to nine volunteers.

Fundacion Reforestemos Impact report
Fundacion Reforestemos has started a reforestation program in Patagonia with native species of plants and sustainable development of forests, with the financial help of the Environment protection fund of the ministry of Chilean environment (n°7RE-004-2018), called “Native reforestation and sustainable forestry development).
During 2017, due to intense and numerous forest fires in January and February, the Foundation started a specific reforestation project to heal the damaged areas . This project was launched and supported by The research Center Dr.Justo Pastor Leon ( Pantanillos Area), in the province of Constitucion, in the Maule Region.During winter season 2017 ( july and august) 23 hectares of forest were succesfuly planted with native species. Among which we can name Hualo (Nothofagus glauca), quillay (Saponara Quillaya), Peumo (Cryptocarya Alba), litro ( Lithraea caustica), Radal (Lomatia hirsuta), Maqui ( Chilensis) ,Bayberry ( Luma Apiculata).
In the area that Piantando is currently supporting with Fundacion Reforestemos, the climate is temperate with peak temperatures of about 24,4°C and minimum temperatures of 6,3°C. Mean annual rainfall is reported around 920mm and a dry period of around 5 months per year.
Geology and Geo-morphology
The Structure is located in the mountain part of the Maule region, which presents a unique metamorphic rock geology. The mountainous system has approximately 1000m elevation, connected with nearby cliffs creating valleys and creeks. this peculiar landscape creates a strongly diverse and heterogeneous environment.
Chilean sector 5 (where the project is currently operating) presents a varying topography with changing slopes between 0% and 40%.
Flora and Fauna
Arboreal variety in the region is dominated by the presence of Hualo, oak trees, ( Nothofagus Obliqu), Gevuina avellana, Ugnimolinae and Escallonia Polverulento.
The risk of extinction for some of the endemic plants is evident in these forests, for example, Ruil (Nothofagusalessandri), Queule (gomortega), Ypitao (Pitavia Punctata). Before the fire of early 2017, it was possible to see also: Radal, Mirto, Salsapariglia,Maqui, Linguale, Oreganillo, Corontillo, Bayberry and Pini Radiati.
Planting in this area was established in area Q ( Yellow spot in the image above). The plantation covers an area of about 8 hectares. The implant was carried out in rows with a density variation depending on the space between each plantation: 2,0 hectares with a density of 2500 trees/ha (distance between trees, 2m x 2m), 2,5 ha with density 1250 trees/ha (2 x 4)m, 2,5 ha of 625 trees/ha (4 x 4)m and 1 ha) with 333 trees/ha (5 x 6)m
In the forest recovery activities, after the first period of vegetative growth, survival varies between 66.4 % and 86.3% of the total trees per hectare.
The height of the plants can reach up to 73 cm and the growth can reach more than 20 cm / season.
On the other hand, for the planting of Quillaja (the most planted trees with the support of Piantando) the survival is almost 100%, with a growth in height and depth of 27.6 cm per season on average.
- Average survival rate of all tree species 66.4% 66.4%
- Quillaja Saponaria survival rate 86.3% 86.3%
Compared to the natural regeneration of forests after deforestation and fires, this project presents a high increase in productivity of species regenerated by seed and vegetatively (with transplantation and planting). Native species that show a high regeneration capacity are mostly shrub-like.
The native forest in the region had already been classified as “in danger” and due to the generation of Pines which, growing much faster, are putting at risk local varieties devastated by fires.
Currently, due to the invasion of pine trees, the streams and small wooded patches are in serious danger of continuity in their regeneration.
Therefore, the continuity of the Fundacion Reforestemos projects is essential to keep the natural habitat of the Region balanced and to continuously promote progress and reforestation.
The natural response of Quillaji trees, both in survival and growth, is very positive. This can be a great start to improve the diversity of the region by allowing the forest matrix to diversify.
Fundaciòn Reforestemos continues with both planting and monitoring activities, to be able to measure settlement models, plant growth and the process of natural and assisted regeneration.
Thank you for being part of this project, with Piantando, for the forests of the Chilean Patagonia.
